> mainnet --explain

How Mainnet works.

Its own encrypted network on top of the internet – with its own domains, its own mail and its own browser. This page calmly explains what happens, what it protects and where its limits are.

↓ read on

A network of its own. On top of the internet.

Mainnet uses the internet's cables, but not its names, servers and accounts. Pages come from nodes instead of a central web server – and every block is checked before it is shown.

Your own domains

Any ending you want: .de, .com, .berlin, .cp77 or one entirely your own. €4.99 a year.

Your own mail

Every domain comes with mail. End-to-end encrypted, no phone number, no real name.

Your own browser

The Mainnet Browser opens mainnet:// addresses, checks every page and blocks requests to the old internet.

Beta Mainnet is in beta. An independent security audit is planned before launch – the report will be published.

Addresses that belong to you.

A Mainnet address looks like a web address – just with mainnet:// in front. Your browser does not ask DNS for it, but your own node.

mainnet://shop.cp77

mainnet://
Opens in the Mainnet Browser or the app – not on the old internet.
shop
The name you want. Reviewed before approval: name, trademark, payment.
.cp77
The ending. Any ending is possible unless it is reserved.

Every domain comes with mail (postmaster@shop.cp77) and, if you like, a public domain card on the normal internet: cypherpunk2077.com/shop.cp77.

Mainnet domains only apply inside Mainnet, independent of same-named domains on the old internet. Reserved endings are not assigned.

> mainnet://shop.cp77

A page visit, layer by layer.

What happens when you open a Mainnet page? Keep scrolling – the layers wrap around your request one after another.

  2. Paddingframes padded to uniform sizesalways
  3. Multipathlarge files over separate Tor circuitsfrom 1 MiB
  4. Torthree layers – each relay only knows its neighboursdefault
  5. EncryptionTLS 1.3 with X25519 + ML-KEM-768 · authenticity via signature and BLAKE3always
  6. Pageindex.html and images – signed by the ownercontent
  1. Your browser asks your own node.

No DNS, no outside name server: the browser asks the Mainnet node on your own device (127.0.0.1).

  2. Name, pointer, witnesses.

The node looks the name up in its copy of the public log – valid only with 2 of 3 witness signatures. Then it fetches the site pointer signed by the owner.

  3. Encryption.

Everything is encrypted on the way: TLS 1.3 with a hybrid key exchange of X25519 and ML-KEM-768. Every page and every piece is also checked for authenticity – signature and BLAKE3.

  4. Tor.

By default everything runs over Tor. Each relay removes or adds one layer. The guard knows your IP but not the destination – the meeting point knows neither side.

  5. Multipath.

Large files arrive in pieces over several separate Tor circuits. A single relay only sees part of the transfer.

  6. Padding.

Messages are padded to uniform sizes, so their size reveals less about what is being sent.

  7. Mixing.

In high-security mode (beta) mail leaves randomly delayed and between dummy messages, plus cover traffic. This makes it much harder for observers to learn anything from timing and volume.

  8. ✓ verified.

Only when name, pointer and every piece check out does the browser show the page – with a strict security policy and no requests to the old internet.

Tor protects against ordinary observers, not against every attacker. In “fast” mode other nodes see your IP. Multipath from 1 MiB (high security: always); mixing and cover traffic only in high-security mode, so far on PC only.

The whole journey as an ASCII film.

27 scenes in two chapters – with timeline, chapters, speed and keyboard control. Without JavaScript the film simply plays.

1 · Dein Schlüssel bleibt bei dir1 · Your key stays with you1 · 密钥留在你手中1 · 鍵はあなたの手元に

Your keys are created on your device, derived from 24 words only you know. The registry only knows the public part.

2 · Domain kaufen mit Kennbetrag2 · Buying a domain: identifying amount2 ·

Every order gets its own Bitcoin address and a unique identifying amount: slightly rounded down, exact to the satoshi. That lets the registry match the payment without an account; then it reviews name, trademark and payment. Bitcoin is public – ideally pay from your own wallet.

3 · Eintrag ins öffentliche Log3 · An entry in the public log3 ·

Once approved, the registry appends an entry to the public log: name and owner key. Witnesses check that no earlier entry was changed and cosign – a log state only counts with 2 of 3 signatures. A forgery shows up as soon as nodes compare their log states.

4 · Seite als .site signieren4 · Signing the site as .site4 · 将网站签名为 .site4 · サイトを .site として署名

Der signierte Seiten-Zeiger sagt dem Netz, welche Version gilt.“mainnet pack” turns your folder into a .site package: optimised, every file hashed with BLAKE3, signed with your deploy key. A host starts nothing before the signature is checked. The signed site pointer tells the network which version is current.“mainnet pack”把你的文件夹打包成 .site:经过优化,每个文件都有 BLAKE3 哈希,并用你的部署密钥签名。

Default for hosting: your site is served through a Tor onion service – Tor is built in. Host and visitor meet via Tor relays; zone and site pointer name the onion address, not an IP. “Host directly” is faster but shows the IP. Tor protects against ordinary observers, not against every attacker.

6 · Name auflösen über das Log6 · Resolving a name via the log6 · 通过日志解析名称6 · ログで名前を解決

Kein DNS, keine ICANN: Dein Knoten hat eine eigene Kopie des Logs. Merkle-Beweis und 2 von 3 Witness-Unterschriften führen zum Inhaber-Schlüssel. Mit ihm prüft der Knoten den Seiten-Zeiger – Wurzel-Hash und Onion-Adresse.No DNS, no ICANN: your node keeps its own copy of the log. A Merkle proof and 2 of 3 witness signatures lead to the owner key. With it the node checks the site pointer – root hash and onion address.

7 · Laden in geprüften Stücken7 · Loading in verified pieces7 ·

The site arrives in 256 KiB pieces, from the host over Tor or from visitor caches. Each piece is checked straight away against the signed root with a BLAKE3 Bao proof. A tampered piece is dropped and fetched again.

8 · Zwei Schlösser: X-Wing8 · Two locks: X-Wing8 · 两把锁:X-Wing8 · 2 つの錠:X-Wing

Signaturen sind in mn1 noch klassisch (Ed25519).X-Wing combines two locks: the proven X25519 and the post-quantum scheme ML-KEM-768. The shared key stays secret as long as either one holds – even if a quantum computer later attacks data recorded today. Signatures in mn1 are still classical (Ed25519).X-Wing

9 · Mail und Chat Ende-zu-Ende9 · Mail and chat end-to-end9 ·

Mail and chat are encrypted on your device (HPKE with X-Wing) and only decrypted by the recipient. Nodes and post offices in between store and see only ciphertext. Mail needs no phone number or real name; chat keeps renewing its keys.

10 · Verteilt speichern10 · Distributed storage10 ·

Private files and mail are encrypted on your device, then split into pieces (for example 3 of 5) and spread across several storage nodes – as long as enough nodes take part. A hacked node holds only one encrypted piece, and outages are tolerated. The security comes from the encryption, not from the spreading.

11 · Keine Cookies, keine Fremd-Tracker11 · No cookies, no outside trackers11 · 无 Cookie,无外部追踪器11 · Cookie なし、外部トラッカーなし

Sign in with a key instead of a password. The browser blocks requests to the old internet – trackers from there cannot get through. And the registry keeps no IP logs: our pledge.

A block is a public log entry with a reason code – there are no secret blocks. Every device checks against its own copy of the log, with no lookup per page visit. Goal: blocked in all official Mainnet programs within 1 minute while they are online. Modified software can ignore it.

Mainnet

Das alte Internet hat Sicherheit nachgerüstet. Mainnet hat sie von Anfang an eingebaut. The old internet bolted security on later. Mainnet has it built in from the start.

14 · Die mainnet://-Adresse14 · The mainnet:// address14 · mainnet:// 地址14 · mainnet:// アドレス

In the Mainnet Browser the site is called mainnet://shop.cp77. Unlike old DNS, the name does not point to an IP but to the owner’s key in the public log. Where the site lives is only stated in the signed site pointer, and your node checks it. That is why the site is authentic and unaltered whether it comes from the owner’s IP, from someone else’s cache or over onion. Who sees whom is a separate question: scene 26.

15 · Vorher: Domain anmelden über Tor15 · Before: registering the domain over Tor15 · 之前:通过 Tor 注册域名15 · その前に:Tor でドメインを登録

Before shop.cp77 exists: “mainnet init” creates the keys on your computer; only public keys go to the registry. In the Mainnet Browser and with “mainnet chat”, the purchase chat always runs over Tor to the onion service of cypherpunk2077.com – no account, no e-mail. The registry sees the name, public keys, payment and refund address, but not your IP. Bitcoin is public: exchanges can link payments to people.

16 · Der Browser fragt deinen eigenen Knoten16 · The browser asks your own node16 · 浏览器询问你自己的节点16 · ブラウザーは自分のノードに尋ねる

The browser does not resolve mainnet://shop.cp77 itself. It asks your own node (mainnetd) through the local API: only on 127.0.0.1, with a token from pairing, GET and HEAD only. There is no DNS query. Web pages cannot reach the API port, and the node rejects requests with an Origin header. The node does every check in the next scenes; the browser only shows the result.

17 · Name prüfen im eigenen Log17 · Checking the name in your own log17 · 在自己的日志中验证名称17 · 自分のログで名前を検証

Your node keeps a full copy of the registry log and recomputes the name map itself. A log state only counts with both registry signatures (Ed25519 and ML-DSA-65), with 2 of 3 witness signatures, and if it is consistent with the previous state. If the name is active, not suspended and the state is at most 24 hours old, it counts as verified – the result is the owner key.

18 · Zone und Seiten-Zeiger holen18 · Fetching the zone and site pointer18 ·

Im Modus „Schnell“ sehen DHT-Knoten, was du nachschlägst. With the owner key, the node fetches the zone and the site pointer from the DHT (Kademlia). The zone is signed by the owner and carries the certificate of their deploy key. The pointer is signed with that deploy key and names the root (BLAKE3 hash of the manifest) and the onion address, which is bound to the domain by its own signature. Older pointers are rejected. In “fast” mode, DHT nodes see what you look up.

The DHT lists providers. With the default “hidden hosting”, the owner does not register there, and zone and pointer contain no IP. Providers are then visitor caches – nodes that already fetched and checked the site, under their own ID. If there is no cache, your node fetches the site over Tor from the onion service. With “host directly”, the owner itself is listed in the DHT, with its IP.

To a cache or an owner who hosts directly, your node connects directly: libp2p over QUIC or TCP, port 4077, TLS 1.3 with the hybrid key exchange X25519MLKEM768 (classic plus post-quantum). Every request travels inside it, encrypted. An observer sees both IP addresses, size and timing, not the content. Limits: over TCP a classic fallback (Noise) is possible, and the certificate signatures are classic.

Your node (with Tor built in, Arti) builds a circuit to a meeting point, the rendezvous; the owner’s onion service builds its own. In between are six relays run by volunteers. Each relay removes or adds one layer of encryption; inside, the end-to-end encryption to the service stays. The guard knows your IP but not the destination; the rendezvous knows neither side. Tor protects against ordinary observers, not against every attacker.

The fetch runs over /mainnet/fetch/1 in groups of 256 KiB – from up to 8 providers at once, two requests each. Each group is checked straight away with a BLAKE3 Bao proof against the root from the pointer. If a provider sends wrong data, the piece is dropped, the provider is blocked for an hour and another one delivers it again. At the end the whole file is hashed. Over Tor it goes one after another on a single stream.

It runs at the app host, not in your browser, inside the mn-runtime sandbox: a fresh instance per request, by default 100 ms of CPU time and 64 MiB of memory, no network, no files, mail as the only way out. Your node sends requests to routes like /api/* via /mainnet/app/1 to the app host named in the signed site pointer – for hidden sites over Tor to their onion service. Only after all checks does the browser show the site, with a strict CSP: content only from Mainnet and the site itself, no plugins, nothing from the old internet. Cookies are off by default, third-party cookies always blocked. The badge shows “◆ shop.cp77 · ✓ verified”. A Mainnet site is always authentic and encrypted in transit – whatever IP, cache or onion it comes from. Who sees whose IP depends on the mode. The default for browsing is “anonymous”: everything goes over Tor, DHT nodes and caches do not see your IP. One click on “fast” connects directly – quicker, but then DHT nodes and caches see your IP. Hidden-hosted sites (the hosting default) do not show visitors the owner’s IP; with “host directly” it is visible. Tor protects against ordinary observers, not against every attacker.

Three levels. Your choice.

Content is encrypted at every level. The level decides how well “who talks to whom” is protected – and what that costs in speed.

Fast

Direct connections to other nodes. For public pages, downloads and video.

Metadata protection
1/3
Speed
3/3
  • Other nodes see your IP address.
  • Mail, sign-in, buying a domain and the registry still always go over Tor.

Anonymous Default

Everything runs over Tor. Your internet provider only sees “Tor”, not which pages you visit.

Metadata protection
2/3
Speed
2/3
  • Typically 0.5–2 seconds more per page.
  • Optionally disguised via Tor bridges (beta, PC only).

High security Beta

Plus: vanguards, coarse size steps, multipath always, mail delayed by 10 minutes on average, dummy messages and cover traffic.

Metadata protection
3/3
Speed
1/3
  • Costs about 45 MiB a day, battery and waiting time.
  • Mail mixing and cover traffic so far on PC only.

Does not protect against malware on your device, your own mistakes or a very strong observer who watches your network and the destination at the same time for a long period – it only makes their job harder.

Mail, chat, tunnels, search.

Everything you do in Mainnet runs through your own node – with your own keys.

Mail

Addresses for every domain. Encrypted on your device, decrypted only by the recipient. Post offices in between store only ciphertext until it is collected.

alice@shop.cp77

Chat

1:1 and groups of up to 256. Keys are renewed as you go, with a post-quantum step. No phone number.

mainnet://chat

Tunnel Preview

SSH, a game server or a local web app over Mainnet – as a port on 127.0.0.1, only with your approval for each peer. No VPN, no exit to the old internet.

127.0.0.1:2222 → ssh

Search

Find Mainnet sites through several independent indexers. Search queries always go over Tor; blocked content is filtered out.

3/5

Three of five. One piece alone is useless.

Private files and mail are encrypted on your device, split into pieces and spread across different nodes. Reading them takes three of the five pieces – and your key.

  1. Piece 1✓ back
  2. Piece 2hacked: one encrypted piece only
  3. Piece 3✓ back
  4. Piece 4offline
  5. Piece 5✓ back

3 pieces → join → decrypt ✓

The security comes from the encryption, not from the spreading. Needs enough storage nodes. “3 of 5” is an example.

A public log. With witnesses.

Every domain, every approval and every suspension is recorded in a public, signed log. Independent witnesses cosign – valid only with 2 of 3 signatures.

  1. #4709register · garden.net
  2. #4710renew · kunst.berlin
  3. #4711policy · terms v2
  4. #4712new: shop.cp77

witness A ✓witness B ✓witness C · not reachable2 of 3 → valid

A forgery shows up.

Nodes compare their log states. If one differs, it shows up as soon as they exchange them – even if the registry itself tried to forge.

The operator's sign of life.

Planned from launch: the operator regularly signs a sign of life into the log. If it stops, all Mainnet software warns – yellow after 14 days, red after 30. Nothing happens automatically.

See the current sign of life and check it yourself

cypherpunk2077.com is only the registry.

The registry assigns names and keeps the log. The network itself is carried by the users' nodes.

What it does

  • reviews names before approval: name, trademark, payment
  • keeps the public log – every decision visible with a reason code
  • runs the portal, downloads, WHOIS and the chat without an account
  • suspends according to the terms of use, after a report – publicly in the log

What it cannot do

  • read your mail and chats – they are end-to-end encrypted
  • sign for you – it only knows the public part of your key
  • change the log unnoticed – witnesses and nodes compare states

To be honest

  • New domains and suspensions depend on it – assignment is central.
  • Existing domains and sites keep running even if cypherpunk2077.com goes down – as long as their nodes are online.
  • “No IP logs” is a registry pledge you cannot verify. Over Tor you do not need it.

What the registry knows: the data map

An honest comparison.

Mainnet is not better at everything. Here is where it differs – including where today's internet is ahead.

Today's internet, typical webmail (e.g. Gmail) Mainnet
NamesDNS at registrars; your DNS provider sees your lookupsMainnet stronger here: public, signed log with witnesses; resolved by your own node
Accountusually an e-mail address or phone numberMainnet stronger here: a key on your device instead of an account and password
Mail contentencrypted in transit, usually stored readable at the providerMainnet stronger here: end-to-end: readable only by sender and recipient
Who talks to whomproviders and services see destinations and IP addressesMainnet stronger here: over Tor by default – much harder to tell, not impossible
Trackerscookies, pixels and fingerprints on many sitesMainnet stronger here: the browser blocks requests to the old internet; sites can bring their own code
Suspensionsproviders and registrars decide, often without a public traceMainnet stronger here: by public rules; every suspension is in the log with a reason code
Speedfast – large data centres and CDNsMainnet weaker here: slower over Tor; large videos take time
Maturityproven for decades, widely reviewedMainnet weaker here: beta; independent audit planned before launch
Accessany browser, anywhereMainnet weaker here: needs the Mainnet Browser or the app

What Mainnet cannot do.

Good security starts with honest limits. Please read this part.

Secure does not mean anonymous.

Encryption protects content. Who talks to whom is only protected by Tor – and not against every attacker either.

No system is free of bugs.

Mainnet is no exception. It is new, and bugs in the code are likely.

A hacked device gives everything away.

Malware on your computer or phone sees what you see and type. No encryption protects against that.

Very strong observers.

Someone who watches your network and the destination at the same time for a long period can match traffic. High-security mode only makes it harder.

Beta.

Much is built and tested, but not yet long in real use. Some parts so far run on PC only.

The audit is still to come.

An independent security audit is planned before launch, but not yet commissioned. The report will be published.

Bitcoin is public.

Payments are visible to everyone on the blockchain. Ideally pay from your own wallet, not directly from an exchange that requires ID.

“Fast” shows your IP.

In “fast” mode other nodes see your IP address. The default is “anonymous”.
